New Ideals: the Image of the "New Woman" in Photography

The exhibition examines the female figures in photographs taken in both Germany and Palestine in the 1930s-1950s. During these two decades, the status of women in both countries underwent numerous changes, which were reflected in photographic imagery. These images mirrored the values of the societies in which these photographers and their subjects lived and worked. In order to examine the continuing concern with gender and national identity in art today, part of the exhibition will be devoted to the works of contemporary artists.
